Following on from my last blog and as a prelude to our group presentation, I am going to briefly discuss Hate and the Code. The Code produces signs and these signs are what produce hate and fear because by putting everything in to separate boxes with labels it integrates and separates at the same time. The system of representation reduces all meanings, beliefs and sensations into signs so nothing is left as sacred; there is nothing beyond because everything is accounted for in the signs. Examples of hate that arises from sign-types include sexuality, gender and race. More specific examples of sign-type hate can be identified in ‘middle-class’ fear of ‘chavs/hoodies’ and violence amongst football supporters who clash with other teams.
